Flowers on the Cross

Wondering why there are flowers on the cross this morning?

In spite of it’s function as a brutal form of execution, the cross stands for life at the center of the Christian faith. There can be no Easter without Good Friday, no Resurrection without the Crucifixion! The cross, not the empty tomb, is the primary symbol of Christianity, and as early as the sixth century, a “flowering cross” can be found in Christian art. It is based upon the legend that the cross on which Jesus was crucified, burst into bloom at the moment he died. The legend suggests that the true cross of Christ was from a tree whose seed came from the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. A fun story, but not likely, right? We agree!

However, we do believe that the death of Jesus Christ brings new life to all who put their trust in Him as Savior! So the flowers on the cross today serve as a reminder of the new, abundant and beautiful life that is found in Jesus Christ, and made possible because He willingly gave His life on a cross!
