The action of baptism has a variety of meanings in the history of the Christian Church. How a person understands baptism depends in large part upon their church and theological tradition. Historically, the general categories of understanding are that baptism is a rite of initiation (into the church), an act of identification (with Christ) and/or a celebration of incorporation (into the Body of Christ).
Regardless of a particular perspective or theological persuasion, one truth remains constant: baptism is always tied to life in Christ. Without Jesus Christ, there is no Church, no joining with Him and no belonging in the Body. Baptism originates with and points to life in Jesus Christ. Always!
In the Covenant Church, we choose to express and understand baptism as “a means of grace.” In this expression we are affirming that God acts in baptism as well as in us. At the same time, we recognize that baptism does witness to the community the Christian hope which is grounded in God’s grace, hope for both the individual receiving baptism and for the community standing by, supporting the baptized one, and being encouraged to continue to hope in Christ.
